On Friday, Christian Bergman tossed the club's first complete-game shutout in more than two years. Then on Saturday, they scored three times in the ninth to pull off an improbable late-inning comeback. Drillers drop rain-delayed game to Cardinals, 3-2
For the 16th and final time in the regular season, the Tulsa Drillers hosted the Springfield Cardinals on Thursday night. In a potential playoff preview, Springfield salvaged a split of a four-game series as Jamie Romak's ninth-inning tiebreaking homer gave the Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Drillers before 5,814 fans at ONEOK Field. "They're a good team, we're a good team, there's not much in between us," Drillers manager Duane Espy said. "We just played four hard games. I'm sure they thought they could've won some they lost and we feel like we could've won the two we lost. I think that's a sign of...

Solid history
More than a century ago, some luck was involved in determining the ownership of Tulsa's first pro baseball team. The original owner, Billy Rupp, lost the team in a card game to C.M. Casey sometime between the 1905 and 1906 seasons. A year later, however, Rupp won the team back in another card game with Casey. That somewhat symbolized the early days of pro baseball in Tulsa as teams and owners popped in and out of town until Spencer Abbott moved a Western League franchise to the city from Hutchinson, Kan., in 1919. "There have been a few shaky times in the last 90 years, but since Spencer Abbott came to Tulsa, we have been blessed with solid ownership and that's why Tulsa has been one of the...

Drillers prospects shine in season full of surprises
Chad Bettis and Kyle Parker entered the 2013 season as the Tulsa Drillers' top two prospects and both lived up to expectations. Bettis, who missed nearly two months with an oblique injury, had a 3.71 ERA in 12 starts for Tulsa before making his major league debut with the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 1. He picked up his first major league win last Monday against St. Louis. "After missing all of 2012 (with a shoulder injury), he really matured," Drillers manager Kevin Riggs said. "He's a bulldog. I was impressed by how intense he is and how that rubs off on other guys." Parker, the former Clemson starting quarterback, was a Texas League all-star outfielder as he batted .288 with 23 homers and 74...

Home runs hinder Drillers pitcher Edwar Cabrera in loss to Northwest Arkansas

Cabrera also leads the TL with a 0.87 WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched). However, he's also on top of another category he would rather not lead - home runs allowed with 11. In seven innings on Tuesday night, Cabrera gave up only five hits, but three were solo homers in a 3-1 loss to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals before 5,411 fans at ONEOK Field. "About 30 percent of the hits off him this year have been home runs," Drillers manager Duane Espy said. "It seems like when they hit him, they hit it out of the ballpark or they don't hit him.
