The red-hot Drillers are at home for a 4 game homestand against Arkansas this weekend Tulsa Drillers The Tulsa Drillers (42-44) had a rough first half of the season finishing 3rd with a 29-40 record. But now in the second half, they are not only on a roll, but also currently claim the top spot in the North Division standings with a 13-4 record, sitting a half game ahead of the Northwest Arkansas Nationals. And this weekend they look to extend that lead with a four game series at home against the Arkansas Travelers. Third Baseman Daniel Mayora leads the Drillers and is also 10th in the Texas League with a .286 batting average. Mayora is also tied for 4th in the league with 21 doubles. Paul...

John Klein: Drillers looking for more major events
The Tulsa Drillers, armed with the deluxe ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa, will no longer be shy about going after major events. The Texas League All-Star Game is coming to ONEOK on June 28, returning to Tulsa for the first time since 1999, just one year after the Drillers lured their major league affiliate Colorado Rockies to ONEOK. Now, Tulsa general manager Mike Melega believes all sorts of opportunities, including bids for a second Bedlam Series game and the Big 12 Tournament, are in the works. "We feel like we owe it to our community, for what Tulsa has done with this new ballpark, to go out and get all of the major events we can," said Melega. "We want to have something special, in...

ONEOK Field adding water pad play area
ONEOK Field will open the minor league baseball season this coming year with a new amenity that is sure to be a home run during the brutal hot days of summer. The Tulsa Drillers are spending a little more than $250,000 to add an interactive fountain pad flanked with table seating where children can play or adults can at the least get their feet wet to cool off. "The idea came about because last summer the extreme heat made such an impact on us at the end of the season that people were at home looking at one another asking, 'Are we going to the game? It's so hot,'" said Driller co-owner Jeff Hubbard. "That made us begin to think about what could we do to turn that conversation around at the...

John Klein: Drillers hope for attendance bump this year at ONEOK Field
THE OPENING of ONEOK Field has been everything and more than expected. The Tulsa Drillers hoped for an increase in attendance when they moved from their traditional home at Expo Square to ONEOK Field, located in the midst of a downtown revival. But, the Drillers have exceeded the projections for ONEOK Field. The two greatest attendance years in Tulsa professional baseball history have come the past two seasons. The Drillers drew an all-time record 408,183 fans in its first season at ONEOK. Then, they followed it with 366,291 fans last summer. The Drillers opened their home season on Thursday night and they hope that this will be among the top three attendance seasons in Tulsa's baseball...

Drillers try to help fans at ONEOK Field cope with the heat
Kyle Reans' forehead gleaned with sweat, the effects of walking from his parking spot to the ONEOK Field gate on Sunday. Reans, a Tulsa native, attended Sunday's Tulsa Drillers game with his two children, ages 6 and 5. The first-pitch temperature read 107 degrees, however. The chances that he and his sons would stay for the game's duration were slim. "We probably aren't," he said. Reans prepared for the extreme heat by bringing a towel he planned to dip in water to keep cool. He experienced the plight all Drillers fans face when attending games in July and August: trying to enjoy a ball game while battling the intense heat. The average temperature at first pitch for the Drillers' July home...

Solid history
More than a century ago, some luck was involved in determining the ownership of Tulsa's first pro baseball team. The original owner, Billy Rupp, lost the team in a card game to C.M. Casey sometime between the 1905 and 1906 seasons. A year later, however, Rupp won the team back in another card game with Casey. That somewhat symbolized the early days of pro baseball in Tulsa as teams and owners popped in and out of town until Spencer Abbott moved a Western League franchise to the city from Hutchinson, Kan., in 1919. "There have been a few shaky times in the last 90 years, but since Spencer Abbott came to Tulsa, we have been blessed with solid ownership and that's why Tulsa has been one of the...

John Klein: Tulsa Drillers owners carry on tradition of active involvement
THE WISH LIST for Tulsa Drillers owners Dale and Jeff Hubbard is pretty short. The Drillers have a beautiful 1-year-old stadium, a cozy relationship with their parent club in Denver and a loyal baseball fan base. "I guess it would be great if our dad could come here and see this stadium," Dale said. "It was always his dream to have a new stadium in downtown Tulsa. He talked about it a lot. "I remember he was close to getting it done at one time back in the 1990s. When that didn't happen, I remember how disappointed he was. So, it would be something if he could see what has happened here in Tulsa." Their father, Went Hubbard, was the owner of the Drillers from 1987-2006 and is generally...
